'50 Best Beers in the U.S.?' What do you think?

Pliny the Elder wins 4th year in a row!

Whaddup!
There is this poll that runs every year thanks to the homebrew publication Zymurgy Magazine regarding what their readers think is the best beer in the U.S. Well its been ten years and running, and it looks like Russian River's Pliny the Elder Double IPA out of California is reigning supreme for the fourth year in a row! I got my hands on some Pliny thanks to man J.D., the beer pimp of Eli Cannon's Tap Room in Connecticut and a fellow Sierra Nevada Beer Camper who hooked me up with a bottle last weekend when we were in Chico. (Thanks homey!)
Honestly, I am not mad at what the 16,445 pollsters picked, but I know of some gangster breweries out there that should certainly get a nod in the future, including Utah's Epic and Uinta, Ithaca, Three Floyds, Brooklyn, and of course, some Georgia guys who are kickin' tail like SweetWater and Terrapin when it comes to multi-state access. Of course, it's all about distribution and exposure, but hey, I'm just sayin'. Anyway, one thing is for certain: America has a ton of hop heads because the first 19 flex some serious muscle in the IBU department. I damn sure am one of 'em!

So congrats to this Top 50 list. I will have to admit that I have had every single one of them and truth be told, none of them suck. Seriously. My challenge is for you to try 'em all as well. To show love to those who got snubbed, feel free to add to this list in the comment section and/or on my twitter handle (www.twitter.com/alesharpton). I will certainly chime in and post what you guys think deserves justice in a week or so. Sound cool? Let's do it!

MillerCoors brings Ice Cube & Co. to ATL! Word!

Congrats to my 5 trivia winners who get to see
Ice Cube, 2 Chainz, DJ Khaled, DJ Drama and Atlanta's next upcoming MC!

Whew!
Things have been nuts this past week, including hitting up Cali for one helluva awesome beer experience! (Stay tuned for details!) Speaking of the West Coast, when I got back to Atlanta, MillerCoors hit me up with an opportunity to hook up five of my fellow beer lovers with a pair of tickets to see rappers Ice Cube, 2 Chainz, DJ Khaled, DJ Drama and a handful of MCs competing for Coors Light's "Coldest MC" in Atlanta. The contest is called "The Search for the Coldest" and it will be held this Thursday, June 28th, at the posh Club Reign in Downtown Atlanta (1021 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309) with doors opening at 7 p.m. With such a line-up, it was a no-brainer to show love to my followers and give them an opportunity to win the stubs.
Now, MillerCoors and I have worked together in the past on a few events including me hosting the 2nd Annual MillerCoors T.A.P. Awards, and featuring Blue Moon and Leinenkugel's on my beer list for the High Gravity Hip Hop Beer Festival, the first of its kind in the world! Evidently, we both share love for the world of Hip-Hop, so why not continue to spread it?
Ice Cube going solo in 1989 and birthing the classic debut,
AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted!
With that being said, I ran some trivia only the truest of rap aficionados would know involving the living legend on the mic, Ice Cube! I mean, come on, from his unforgettable verses with N.W.A., to his starring role on Boyz N Da Hood, and remarkable discography including two classic solo albums Amerikkka's Most Wanted and Death Certificate, why wouldn't I base trivia on him?

Here was the question I posted on my @AleSharpton Twitter:

Ice Cube's cousin is also legendary in the rap scene, and is responsible for starting one of the most influential cliques of lyricists the genre has ever seen. Hint: Members in this crew birthed a classic in '93. Who is this MC?

Within seconds, I received an overwhelming response by email (alesharpton@gmail.com) and by direct message on Twitter (so that no one else could see the answer) and only the first five to get it right took home a pair of tickets for Thursday.
The answer? Del The Funkee Homosapien
Del's one of my favorite MCs (just witness his mastery here) and had Ice Cube featured on his seriously funky debut album in 1991, I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Ice Cube also did some production on this album. (Also check out Del's space age classic, Deltron 3030. Bananas!!!) Thanks to Ice Cube's influence and status in the rap game, Del, along with a legion of others have been able to bless our ears with some West Coast flavor.
Congrats to my winners @ericnine @frmmxwlove @lilgsims3000 @eastsidered and @thrillistatl
You are true Hip-Hop Heads! For everyone else, there will be more competitions, I promise.
Special thanks goes to  The Garner Circle PR firm and, of course, MillerCoors.

And as Ice Cube says, "Yayeeyayee!"

I'm heading to Sierra Nevada's Beer Camp! Hell yeah!

Cheers to my sister's friend's son for modeling a happy face for me!
Does he rock or what?!
How hyped? This HYPED!

Be ready as I take my ongoing Cruisin' For A Brewsin' series to Chico, California to brew a beer from scratch with one of the greatest, most innovative, consistent and revered breweries in the U.S., Sierra Nevada! Yep! Your homey Ale Sharpton and a handful of other lucky beer enthusiasts, pub owners, and aficionados from around the country are flying to Northern California for a full tutorial on making the world's greatest beverage, have a "friendly" debate on what the hell we are going to make with a plethora of ingredients to choose from, and then actually do it all within two days! This is called Sierra Nevada Beer Camp and we are going to be Beer #80. What's even cooler is that, under the guidance of Brewmaster Terence Sullivan & Co., our beer will undoubtedly be gangster and sold throughout North America!
I am so excited and blessed to be involved in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so it would only be right to take you with me, right???
Well let's go! Look for photos, a vid or two, and a fun-filled recap on my adventures in Chico. The pressure will build to create a delicious, inventive 80th edition to this prestigious roster of well crafted sippers, and I welcome it pounding my chest because it should be pretty damn awesome!
Peace!!!

ATL’s 38th Annual StarChefs Gala was incredible!

Some lovely ATL foodies showing Ale some love at StarChefs!

5 Season Brewmaster (and homey)
Crawford Moran gets ranked ATL's top dog!

Man, I had a ball at the 38th Annual StarChefs.com Gala that was hosted at the Goat Farms Art Center last Wednesday, June 13th. It was an awesome event with Atlanta’s burgeoning chefs showcasing their flair for inventive cuisine. The final count was about 400 people as we walked around to taste some wild bites paired with a gang of wine and, thank goodness, brew!!! In fact, my homey, FiveSeasons Westside and North Brewmaster Crawford Moran, saw me and pulled me to side to sample some of the goodies he had on deck for the stellar evening. I was joined by AJC Beer Writer Bob Townsend, Terrapin Brewery Co-Founder and Brewmaster Spike Buckowski, and a few other beer nuts who toasted off his brewing mastery.
5 Seasons' Brewmaster Crawford (left)
and the Farm Burger Posse.
It turns out that C.M. had been selected as the top brewer in the metro Atlanta/Athens craft brewing scene aka the Artisan Brewer award by StarChefs! This prestigious honor is officially described as an award given to “…the individual brewer in the region who is creating the best, most unique, highest quality beers in the craft-brewing scene.” Trust me, after tasting a number of Crawford’s signature concoctions over the years, it is well deserved! Cheers, C-Diddy!
The HD1 gangster dog!
As for the grub, there were some crazy things on deck (Abattoir’s octopus hot dog anyone?), but HD1 and Flip Burger’s collaboration—the Pastrami Dog with Ox Tongue-Australian Beef Short-Rib Hash and Rusky H Dressing prepared by my main dude Jared Lee Pyles—had me coming back for more like a Pavlov experiment!
Anyway, walking around this remarkable Goat Farm (which looked like the ruins from a WWII bomb site in Europe that was transformed into something useful), I took some cool shots of all the hip folks who joined me in one of the most memorable food events to date. Check out some of my photos as well as the eclectic, yet delectable dishes, burgeoning chefs, beer pairings and award winners! Make it a point to visit these restaurants in the very near future. Evidently, Atlanta’s food scene is off the meter!

Saturday in Atlanta is Brewtiful!

I had a ball at Wrecking Bar's Anniversary on Friday. They are at it again today, slinging some new, limited edition growlers with the government label so that you can fill 'em up legally! You just have to be one of the first 100 to come in today.
Speaking of Anniversaries, shout out to Thinking Man Tavern in Decatur. Nine years deep, they are still doing their thing! I will be there to celebrate with them after I kick it Jailhouse Brewery, Eagle and Lion Pub, and finally, 5 Seasons Brewery on the Westside thanks to Atlanta Beer Tours!

Get on the wagon and chill with them every Saturday! I sure the hell am!

Cheers!

Wrecking Bar’s First Anniversary is going to be nuts!

It’s been a year already and I love how this great gastropub just down the street from Little Five Points is kicking so much tail. I was there on the first day and ever since, it has been a great meeting place for us beer nerds, people who want a damn good meal (my homey Benny from D.C. has to go here immediately to get their burger when he touches down in Atlanta), a when it comes to beer you can’t get anywhere else, they do it with excellence!
So, from Friday, June 15, at noon, through the weekend, here’s what’s in store. Congrats Wrecking Bar!

Cool Beer Stuff for Father’s Day!

Hook Pops up and show him love through brews!

Hey, it’s the weekend and some of ya just got paid. Get your shopping on for Father’s Day with everything from titanium-laced sunglasses serving as bottle openers to an awesome deal on one of the best beer festivals in the South, Hotoberfesta sweeeeeet SweetWater beer cooler, a butterfly knife top popper, free pints given out by ATL restaurants, a chance to win a trip to Belgium!
And this is only the first installment!
Now let's do this...

$20 tix to HOToberfest Beer Festival? Friggin' cheap!
First, be one of the 100 folks to grab $20 tickets to one of the best beer festivals in the South, HOToberfest. My homeys and HOToberfest founders Alan, Tryon, and Denise hit me up and wanted to run this exclusive deal on my site first, so I had to show them—and you—love. It's in Atlanta and all the info is right here, so you better be there. Come on, more than 200 different beers in the fall? A no-brainer!

Chill out with SweetWater Brewery's 24-pack cooler
SweetWater Brewery is kickin’ major fishtail in the Southeast, (the number one selling microbrewery in fact), and now they have this slick 24-pack cooler so you can pack it with the brews that make them the big fish! Check out their other hippie-inspired gear in their Schwag Shop too.

Kickass Sunglasses that open bottles!
Kickstarter’s site (www.kickstarter.com) is an ingenious way to get start-ups funding around the world, and I received an email from some cool cats who are making JackHawk 9000 Sunglasses— Risky Business-looking shades that serve as bottle openers! I mean, come on, they have arms made from unbreakable, aerospace grade titanium. And the lenses? They say, “We picked the highest quality polarized lenses available. They provide the greatest solar protection (filtering out UVA/UVB/UVC light and blue light up to 400nm) and are coated with Iradium to reduce glare and improve scratch resistance. The hinges were designed to meld metal to metal and are vacuum welded to the arms, so they won't break.”
See what I'm sayin'?

Take Pops to Belgium thanks to Affligem Brewery!
Or at least try to get this sick poring tray and glasses.

Thanks to DRAFT Magazine, the awesome beer Affligem, and Visit Flanders, there is the possibility for a lucky person to win a trip for two to Belgium, while 200 other winners will score an exclusive Affligem (pronounced Aff-li-gem with a hard “g”) pouring tray including the slick glassware (pictured). All you have to do is watch this video, complete the entry form, and answer the question Bart Simpson could answer.
Winners are selected randomly and the contest ends July 16, 2012. Good luck!

Spread wings with this Butterfly Bottle Opener!
Pop one for Pops like Two Bit from The Outsiders!
There is not much say except this has got to look cool when you open a bottle with this gadget!
Two Bit from The Outsiders is the guy I think about whenever “butterfly” comes up. He made that knife so damn cool! (If you don’t know who I am talking about, you had a loser English teach since you weren't assigned to read that classic book by S.E. Hinton., let alone show you the flick with one of the most ultimate all-star casts you will every see.)  Anyway, here’s the link courtesy of Gizmodo.com.

Erykah Badu Goes TOTALLY Nude??? Kinda!

The uncut video link is below!
There is a beer reference below...somewhere.

Okay, I usually talk about brews, but I love having my own site so that I can do whatever the hell I want! Since music is my life and am a big fan of Erykah Badu (plus I included her in my interview with Jazz great Roy Ayers), when I heard she took things to the next level regarding, ummm, exposing for her true self for the world to see in another nude music video, I had to post it! She drove especially the gents nuts with her "Window Seat" video by showing off her assets here:

But the cover she did of Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" with rockers The Flaming Lips made "Window" look like a Pixar flick. Shout out to the sparse music and creative direction of George Salisbury, but I am definitely curious to what her past lovers including phenomenal MCs Andre 3000, Common, and Jay Electronica (in that order) have to say! Anyway, for the artistry of it, see for yourself before the haters ban it!!!

Here's the link:

Before your jaw totally hits the floor, though, sources report that when her "privacy" appears (I took it back to grade school with that one!), it is actually Erykah's younger sister Koryan Wright, with the stage name Nayrok Udab who did this GAP ad with her:

But still...
Regardless, as for the beer reference, I'll drink a Foothills Brewing cocoa-infused Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout (9.75 percent) to that!!!

Let me know what you think!
Peace!!!

I am still recovering from an incredible weekend in Atlanta. We're talking the beer brunch at Cypress Street Pint and Plate on Saturday...
The French Toast Sandwich was bangin'!

...And my brother Rashad's birthday at Deckard's Tavern on Sunday...
Happy B-Day, Rashad Suede!

... but Hosting the High Gravity Hip Hop Festival Beer Fest, the first ever Hip Hop Beer Fest, with Dres the Beatnik, Lenox Mercedes, J. Coger, DJ Jamad, and the rest of the crew was absolutely bananas! (That's a good thing, folks). Here is Lenox, the founder, and your homey Ale chilling during the calm before the storm.

I loved being the man in charge of all the brews, and since we received so much love regarding what we had to pour bottomless glasses of that night, I will be posting the legendary list of brews tomorrow as a reference to your future trips to fine package stores and pubs across the world right here on this site. There will also be some great flicks to recap one of the most historic moments in Atlanta when it comes to suds and beats!
Thanks again to you and all the hundreds of hipsters for coming through and supporting our first festival. The mission was accomplished: merging the two of the most beautiful works of art, Hip Hop and Craft Brews, into something incredible! And trust me, it's just the beginning!!!

Peeeeeeeace!!!
